Commissioned in China as a potentially eco-friendly alternative to city expansion, the concept for this unique project was “created as an attempt to minimize our carbon footprint for a sustainable future”. The floating city is designed to have 2 different layers – one above the water and one underwater, and includes plans for electric cars as well as underwater ports for docking submarines. The city would also include a system of waterways and canals so boats could be used for transportation purposes as well. In addition, an entertainment hub is planned for both residents and visitors and “the city will have a farm, a hatchery, and a waste disposal center in order to be entirely self-sufficient.” It actually sounds like a pretty big plan but from looking through some of the photos below, it seems that this extraordinary floating city and its amazing underwater observatory apartments may actually become a reality in the forseeable future.

A view from above showing the ultra-modern design of the proposed floating city.

Notice the geometric shapes in the complex that create a system of canals that would allow boats to be used for transportation.

This enchanting city includes submarine docks that can be used to reach the submerged apartment complexes as well as accessing other areas that are located far underwater.

The massive observatory that is planned for the project is incredibly beautiful with passing fish and sealife visible as a breathtaking background.

You could think of this place as an unbelievable underwater park that you can walk around in to watch amazing fish up-close.

“China Transport Investment Co is reviewing the proposal and is likely to start to test this ambitious project from a smaller scale next year.”

It sure looks nice, just like Atlantis right out of the storybooks. I guess if they ever get one of these amazing floating cities built, I will definitely have to come for a visit!
