This little contraption here is a little device known as the Mirror Box and it was built by photographer Ron Brinkmann to create some of the coolest visual effects you can imagine. Although very simple to construct, this amazing design allows images to be reflected in astonishing patterns and is definitely a mind-blowing special effects trick for making really cool graphic images. A simple explanation of how to build the device is followed by some of the outstanding photos that he took with his brilliant creation. If you are bored, go pick yourself up some mirror tiles and try making one of these fabulous boxes yourself.

Attach 5 mirror tiles together by connecting them all with duct tape in order to form an open box with all the mirror-sides facing in. He then put candles inside, if you build one you can use whatever you want…

Use some duct-tape to make a easy-to-use handle for the 6th tile in order to be able to put the final tile on and take it off easily.

“Set timer on camera, (turn flash on), place camera in box, put mirror ‘lid’ onto box before shutter fires… get cool photo.”

These are some of the REALLY cool photos he took with the candles inside in the box beginning reflected in endless waves…

The types of spacey visual images he created with this Mirror Box are totally amazing!

An astral view from above. Literally a sea of burning candles…

Here he is using the reflected image of the camera itself in the photo and opening the seams slightly to get more light “leaks”.

It is fantastic the range of special effects he was able to produce with this simple-to-make DIY project. Here he also decided to “toss in balls of aluminum foil – because they’re shiny.” Cool pics!

Here is what the photo looks like when taken with the bright flash from the camera.

In this picture he doesn’t use a flash and creates the impression of looking down from a skyscraper on a dark night.

In this image photographer Ron Brinkmann takes a picture manually in order to create a parade of ‘fingers on cameras’ reflected behind him.

This Mirror Ball created some really unbelievable photos…

This photograph is a multi-medium creation featuring candles, a camera, one photographer and the amazing Mirror Box.

Once he got tired of photographing the candles, he decided to take of photo of his favorite Star Wars action toys. “Finally, add Droids. Everything is better with Droids.”
